A letter to myself: A reflection of the end of a degree and a certain class

Dear Past Maddy,

This is Future Maddy. Don’t be alarmed.

I hope you’re well, I know things have been a bit hard and the idea of uni is a bit difficult to focus on right now. You’ve just finished your second last semester of university. The end is in sight, it’s just one more semester, right? One more, and then… What? Work, of course… But like myself, you’re feeling lost, and a little overwhelmed. Yes, you will get that shiny bit of paper at the end that validates all the late nights, time spent travelling, hours writing, tears and deadlines you’ve met… or at least been close enough to them. Depending on if you pass everything, but between you and me I think we’ll be ok.

I’ll tell you what, things might be a bit clearer in a few months. You may not know what you’re going to do after Uni is finished but you will have a better understanding of life, the universe and everything. You’ve enrolled in a class called the Advanced Seminar in Media and Communication and it will be the best thing you will do in all your degree.

Those little questions that have plagued you since you started uni, well some of them get easier to answer.

Who do you want to be?
I want to be valued. I want to be someone of value. I want to be true to myself. I want to make something of myself.

What are your values?

Authenticity. Honestly. Fairness. Respect. Empathy. Loyalty.

Why are you here?

Because I love learning.
Maddy, I know you hate essays, and research reports, and studying. But you love learning. And you’ll probably be back for more.

What do you want to do?

Well hey, I don’t know that yet – but you will know more about what you don’t want to do and that’s a step, and every step is a step closer to knowing.

This class will teach you about your values and how to recognise them cause I know you have no idea what yours are right now. It will teach you about the importance of listening to someone and their story. This class will open up connections to others, create a safe space and allow the thoughts that build up inside your head to have a place to go. You’ll write more than you have in ages, and you’ll like writing. You’ll find that little bit of authenticity that you had scurried away for fear of judgement, and you’ll share your writing to the world.

Amongst all this, you’ll make friends. It will have only taken you 3 years to do, but the people in this class, I promise, they’re the type of people you’ll want to know.

This class, Maddy, will allow you to have conversations about work, about you future, about your home and about your life. You might even see later on how after talking about these things to a room full of strangers it will allow you to see a bit of the absent but implicit. You’ve always thought something was too hard and you’ve stepped back and watched. But you always find something that clicks with you and then all your opinions, thoughts and ideas just come flooding through. This class seems hard, and full of mighty expectations you can’t live up to.

But you will.

Best of luck, I’m off to celebrate the finishing of our degree

Love, Future Maddy
